"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up." Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, NIV

Friendship is such a beautiful gift from God. It's His way of showing us that we're not meant to go through life on our own. Just as Jesus called His disciples friends (John 15:15), He also wants us to build relationships that reflect His love and grace.
The Bible is full of examples of deep and meaningful friendships. Think about King David and Jonathan–their bond was marked by loyalty and selfless love (1 Samuel 18:1-4). Or Ruth and Naomi–Ruth's words, "Where you go, I will go" (Ruth 1:16), show the kind of commitment that keeps relationships strong, even in life's hardest moments.
Let's be honest: life can be messy, and trials often test our friendship. When everything's going well, it's easy to feel connected. But when challenges come, that's when we find out how strong our bonds really are. Proverbs 17:17 says, "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." True friends don't just celebrate the highs with you–they stick by your side when things get tough.
So how do we keep our friendships strong, especially during hard times? Here are a few ways the Bible shows us:
Pray for Each Other: James 5:16 reminds us to pray for one another. Prayer invites God into your friendship and strengthens your connection to Him and each other.
Speak in Love: Our words have so much power. During tough times, choose to speak words that encourage and uplift (Ephesians 4:29).
Carry Each Other's Burdens: Galatians 6:2 says we should "carry each other's burdens." True friendship means being there, even when it's inconvenient.
Forgive Quickly: Nobody's perfect, and ever relationship faces challenges. Colossians 3:13 reminds us to "forgive as the Lord forgave you." Forgiveness is a gift that restores and deepens friendships.
Celebrate and Remember Together: Look back on moments when God's been faithful in your friendship. Just like the Isrealites set up stones of rememberance (Joshua 4:6-7), reflecting on shared victories strengthens your bond.
When we take care of our friendships, we show the love of Christ in a real and tangible way. Life will bring challenges, but with God at the center of our relationships, those challenges can bring us closer together rather than pull us apart.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the gift of friendship. Help me to be the kind of friend who loves, encourages, and supports like You do. Teach me to forgive, to speak life, and to walk alongside my friends in both joy and trials. Strengthen the bonds I have with the people You've placed in my life, and guide us to always reflect Your love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Action Step:
Take a moment today to reach out to a friend. Encourage them, pray for them, or just let them know how much they mean to you. Let your actions show the love of Christ.
