Be Still and Know

Updated: Mar 8

"Be still, and know that I am God."

– Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Life moves fast. Our days are packed with responsibilities, distractions, and endless to-do lists. When was the last time you sat in silence, without a phone in hand or thoughts racing about what's next?

God calls us to be still, not because He needs our quietness, but because we do. When we pause, we position ourselves to hear His voice more clearly. In stillness, we recognize that He is in control, that His plans are unfolding, and that we don't have to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders.

Psalm 46:10 isn't just an invitation; it's a command. "Be still" means to cease striving to let go, and to trust in God's sovereignty. It doesn't mean inactivity or avoidance of responsibility. Rather, it is an intentional act of surrender, acknowledging that God is working even when we are not.

When Jesus walked on earth, He often withdrew to quiet places to pray (Luke 5:16). If the Son of God needed moments of stillness, how much more do we?

Stillness is not always easy. Our minds crave movement, our schedules demand attention, and the world tells us that productivity defines our worth. But God measures differently. He doesn't require us to hustle for His love or prove our value through constant activity. Instead, He invites us to rest in Him, to quiet our hearts and simply be in His presence.

When we choose stillness, we make space for His peace to settle in. We give Him room to remind us who we are–His beloved children. We begin to see that our striving, our worrying, and our relentless busyness were never meant to sustain us. Only He can.

What if today, even for just a few moments, you set everything aside and allowed yourself to rest in His presence? No agenda. No distractions. Just you and God. Let Him fill the silence with His love, His wisdom, and His unshakable peace.

Because when we are still, we remember: He is God. He is faithful. And He is enough.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

In the midst of life's noise, I come to You longing for stillness. My heart is restless, my mind is busy, and too often, I forget to pause and seek You. But today, I choose to be still. I choose to set aside my worries, my striving, and my need for control, and instead, rest in the truth that You are God. Lord, quiet my heart. Help me trust in Your timing, Your plans, and Your presence. When my thoughts race ahead, bring me back to the peace found only in You. Remind me that I don't have to carry the weight of the world–that You are holding all things together, including me. Like Jesus withdrew to be with You, help me to create space in my life to sit in Your presence, to listen for Your voice, and be refreshed by Your Spirit. I surrender today into Your hands and trust that You are working even when I cannot see.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Once again, my aunt has outdone herself. Each week, she hands me an envelope filled with receipts for my Fetch app, but the real treasure is the artwork she decorates them with. This time, her creation made me think of this post. So, of course, I had to share it with you! She's a gift from God!
